Get to know Dr. Richard Kies
Richard L. Kies, MD, FACS is a graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia and their School of Medicine. Following an internship at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center, he completed his residency training in ophthalmology at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He has been practicing in the Cape Girardeau area since 1982 when he established Kies Eye Center and Cape Girardeau Outpatient Surgery Center.
In April 2008, Dr. Richard Kies and his staff merged with Eye Consultants, Inc. Most recently, he has joined the Eye Care Specialists, LLC. team of surgeons.
Dr. Richard Kies sees patients at our Cape Girardeau Doctors’ Park office every other Monday and Wednesday and Tuesday afternoons for pre-operative exams. He performs surgery Tuesday mornings at Physicians Alliance Surgery Center.
Outside of the office, Dr. Richard Kies is an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoys spending time with his family and friends at wine tasting events.

Board certification indicates that beyond his or her basic medical license, an entity recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties has certified the surgeon to practice within his or her specialty. The ABES promotes the highest possible quality ophthalmic surgical care through a certification program which includes a process through which the surgeon’s surgical skills and judgment are tested and observed by his or her peers.

The suffix FACS indicates that a surgeon is a "fellow" of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The ACS was established in 1913 with the mission to improve the quality of care for surgical patients. The organization sets high standards for surgical education and practice. A fellow of the ACS has passed rigorous evaluation and his or her education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct meet the high standards required by the College.

Performed cataract surgery on a mission trip to Kutno/Torun, Poland.
